Alat (Tool) Analisis Hujan Bulanan Indonesia

How to Use the Indonesia Rainfall Analysis Tool

About the Tool

This tool enables users to view satellite rainfall data and rainfall anomalies over Indonesia, and a map of fire risk over the Kapuas district in Central Kalimantan. The tool uses Climate Prediction Center Morphing Technique (CMORPH) satellite-estimated precipitation data, from 2003 to the present. The data are updated every month. This tool enables users to:

This tool can be helpful in understanding recent local rainfall conditions in particular locations in Indonesia and for understanding the spatial distribution of fire vulnerability in the district of Kapuas in Central Kalimantan.

Rainfall and Fire Activity in Indonesia

While this information about rainfall in Indonesia can serve a variety of purposes, this tool was originally designed to assist stakeholders in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, and neighboring provinces to assess the likelihood of high or low fire activity in an upcoming season. Research conducted by IRI in partnership with CARE Indonesia and Bogor Agriculture University suggests that there is a close correlation between satellite-estimated rainfall data and fire hotspot activity in the peatland areas of the Kalimantan region. In particular, rainfall during the dry season from June to October is critical in determining fire activity, whether rainfall conditions in a particular location suggest a more- or less-intense-than-average fire season.

Therefore, if a user wishes to assess the likelihood of severe fires in a particular district, this tool can be used to create a graph of rainfall patterns in that district from 2003 to the present. The tool automatically calculates periods of anomalies (when rainfall is above or below average), and illustrates these with graphs.

For further information about the relationship between fire activity and satellite-estimated rainfall data, or if you have questions about how to interpret the data in this tool, please contact Pietro Ceccato (pceccato@iri.columbia.edu).

How to Use this Tool

To return to the menu page, click the blue "Climate and Fire" link at the top left corner of the page.

Use the "Map Type" drop-down menu to view either a map of precipitation estimates or a map of fire risk over Kapuas district.

Click and Drag to Zoom in to a Region on the Map:

  1. Click the left mouse button at the upper-left corner of the region to which you would like to zoom.
  2. While holding down the mouse button, drag the mouse to the lower-right corner of the region to which you would like to zoom.
  3. Release the left mouse button. The map will redraw automatically.
Zoom Out to the Full Map Extent:
  1. Move your mouse over the map until you see several icons appear above the map.
  2. Click the icon representing a magnifying glass.
  3. The map will redraw automatically.

Change the Date of the Map:

Find the the date of the monthly estimated rainfall map by moving your mouse over the map until you see several icons appear above the map. Ensure that the "Time" icon has been selected and a text box will appear above the map with the date inside.
  1. To step forward or backward by one month, click the corresponding arrow buttons to the left or right of the date text box, and the map will automatically refresh.
  2. To manually change the date of the map, type your date of interest into the text box. For monthly dates type the three-letter English abbreviation for the month, followed by a space, and then the year, such as "Jan 2008", and press "enter".

Generate Time Series Analyses:

  1. From the "Spatially Average Over" drop-down menu select either the size of a rectangular box (e.g., 55 x 55 km) or type of administrative region (province or district) over which estimated monthly rainfall will be averaged to produce time series.
  2. Click on a location on the map to generate time series graphs of monthly precipitation estimates for the selected region.

Download Time Series Data or Graphs in a Variety of Formats:

  1. Once the time series graphs appear on the page, move the mouse over them until you see several icons appear above the graphs, and select the "Download" icon.
  2. Once the "Download" icon has been chosen, select the graph you want to download by clicking on it. A black outline will appear around the graph you have selected.
  3. When the "Download" icon is selected, PDF, GIF, and JPG image download options and two data table options will appear above the graphs. If downloading a graph, once you have chosen the graph you want to download, select the image file format in which you would like to download it. If downloading a data table, select the "table" or "TSV table" option to download time series of the estimated monthly precipitation and the multi-year average monthly estimated precipitation values for the selected location.
