Observed Distribution of Meningitis in Historical Record

This map shows the distribution of observed meningitis epidemics during 1841-1999.

These data are based on the accounts of epidemics attributed to meningococci documented in published literature and internal institutional reports.

The World Health Organization (WHO) proposes the use of epidemic thresholds for the early detection of epidemics and improved control responses. This map is a useful tool in defining 'at-risk' areas in critical need of increased monitoring activities and epidemic preparedness.
